Algeria and Canada to strengthen cooperation in mining sector

A delegation from the Ministry of Energy and Mines has recently completed a working visit to Canada to strengthen cooperation in the mining sector between the two countries, the Embassy of Algeria indicated on Thursday to the Algerian News Agency (APS).

This mission which follows the discussions held by Mr. Youcef Yousfi, Minister's of Energy and Mines during his participation at the 21st World Energy Congress in September, with Quebec officials from the same sector, was an occasion for the delegation to explore with its Canadian counterpart opportunities to strengthen bilateral cooperation particularly in the fields of cartography, geographic information and mining.

During the meetings in Montreal, Quebec and Ottawa, the mining sector delegation has had “very fruitful talks'' with Canadian officials, the source said.

The same source added by saying that “these discussions focused on ''technical cooperation in mining and the relevance of implementing a framework agreement that would be the instrument of institutional cooperation in the mining sector between Algeria and Canada''.

In Ottawa, the delegation conducted a tour to Mining & Mineral Sciences Laboratories (MMSL) and sought the Canadian expertise and know-how to analyze a sample of the Gara Djebilet deposit which is characterized by its high content of phosphorus, says the Embassy of Algeria.

This mission has come to consolidate the discussions already underway in Toronto on the occasion of Algeria's participation in the Congress of the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada in March.

In addition to senior officials of the Ministry of Energy and Mines, the Algerian delegation was composed of the presidents of boards of directors of the National Agency of Geology and Mining Control (ANGCM-ANPM) and the National Mining Heritage Agency (ANPM), the Director General of the National Geological and Mining Research Office(ORGM) and the project-leader of the Algerian bank of geological and mining data.
